Grodno is the only region in Belarus in which the largest number of ancient religious buildings have been preserved, the most important of which are the Lower and Upper Churches, also called the "Old Castle". These buildings are the oldest known Christian churches. Historians believe that the building of the lower church dates back to the beginning of the twelfth century, but it did not stand for long.
