The Arnel Lighthouse is located in the far northeast of the island of São Miguel. It was the first lighthouse to be erected in the autonomous region of the Azores. It was built at the end of the nineteenth century by the great laborer of the northeast, António Alves de Oliveira. Work on November 26, 1876, and has undergone many improvements and modifications over the years, enabling it to survive today while maintaining its functions, and today it is a prominent tourist attraction in the Azores.
