Lahima National Park was created to preserve, protect, restore, explore and promote the nature, landscape, cultural heritage and balanced ecological use of the coastal region of Northern Estonia. There are protected forest, swamp and coastal ecosystems, as well as semi-natural communities, geological features, historical and architectural features. The park is considered one of the most important forest protection areas in Europe and belongs to the European Natura 2000 network as the Lahima Bird and Wildlife Area.
