The historical Kemeralti district in Konak district is one of the most famous ancient and archaeological local markets in Izmir. It was built in the seventeenth century right behind the port and expanded in subsequent centuries. The original shops were made of wood or bricks, and some of them were covered with domes. The name Kemeralti (meaning under the arches) comes from the fact that there are arched streets above all the shops in the market, as well as small shops, plus there are many hostels too.
