Information about Kamelienhaus Pillnitz
Camelinhaus Pillnitz is a glass house located inside the garden of Pillnitz Castle. It was built with the aim of protecting the camellia plant of the Pillnitz type, which is considered one of the oldest and rarest types of camellias, as it is more than 200 years old, and more than 30 thousand flowers grow inside the greenhouse. Tourists can visit the house and see the flowers up close and take pictures next to them. In 1992 a new glass sanctuary for Camellia Pillnitz was opened. This house with a height of 13.2 meters and a weight of 54 tons shelters camellias from October to May. The modern movable building of 1864 cubic meters replaces the protective wooden structure, which was previously constructed and dismantled around the precious camellias at great cost every year in the cold half of the year. It is heated to an air temperature of four to six degrees Celsius. In the warm season, the camellia's protective winter home is moved aside. The greenhouse moves on only four wheels, supported by a 10,800 mm wide girder. [2]
