The Istiqlal Mosque was inaugurated in 1978. It was named after Indonesia's struggle for national independence. Construction work continued for 17 years and was personally supervised by the first president of the Republic of Indonesia. Today, this mosque has become one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia in terms of structure and area. It can accommodate up to 120,000 people, has 4 levels with a balcony, and has a modern architectural design. In addition to being a sacred place of worship, some conferences, seminars and lectures are also held.
