Information about interlaken monastery and castle
This building was initially called the Augustinian Abbey since it was founded in the 12th century. When you visit the place, you will be able to see the bell tower dating back to the 14th century, along with a Gothic monastery and the remains of a church dating back to 1452 AD. You will particularly notice the variety of window designs in the castle chapel. Before it was handed over to the state in the sixteenth century during the Protestant Reformation, the monastery was an inn for pilgrims who headed to the former hermitage of St. Pettus, which is believed to have been in the caves above Lake Thun.
