In 1982, the municipality of Samsun decided to celebrate the centenary of Atatürk's birth by constructing a monument, the largest of its kind in the country, the Comer Monument, and the port was chosen as the ground for this architectural masterpiece. In the monument, Ataturk appears in his military uniform with a number of brave soldiers who led with him the military campaign towards the liberation of the country.
