The Musée de la Hôme de Sambaqui was established in 1964 in the heart of the city and is listed at the federal and state level as the first archaeological museum in the region. The museum contains one of the largest archaeological collections in Brazil, as it includes more than five thousand pieces specialized in prehistoric archaeology, and contains pieces that are nearly 8000 years old, including skeletons, original stone artifacts and ceramic fragments.
