Shumen Historical Museum was established in 1857 when Sava Dobroplodni, a teacher of the Bulgarian Revival period, organized the first expedition to the ruins of the ancient Bulgarian capital and presented their discoveries at the local school. Since 1891 the museum has been located in a building in the city center, It is open to tourists most days of the week and has eight permanent exhibitions presenting artifacts dating from the period between the 5th century BC and the 20th century AD. It is one of the most influential cultural institutions in Shumen, with an extensive network of permanent exhibitions and sites. It also includes nine Departments and a scientific team, and maintains more than 150,000 cultural monuments transferred from the Stone Age to today.
