Himeji Castle is one of the best surviving examples of early 17th century Japanese castle architecture, consisting of 83 buildings with highly developed defense systems and ingenious protection systems. It is a masterpiece of wood construction, combining functionality and aesthetic appeal, both in its elegant appearance unified by the white earthen stucco walls and in the subtlety of the relationships between the building blocks and the multiple roof layers.
