Located on Amsterdam's shopping street Kalverstraat, this narrow church originally served the city's persecuted Catholic community. Because of the dominance of Calvinism, the original Catholic Church was built without aesthetic torches tied to faith to conceal its existence. This modest determination succeeded in deceiving the authorities and allowed the parishioners to practice their religion in relative peace. Its entrance is marked by two life-size carved statues of St. Joseph and a large parrot perched on top of the platform.
