Gwanghwamun Square is divided into six sections, and in the center there is a statue of King Sejong the Great; The fourth and eldest king of the Joseon dynasty and creator of the Hangeul system of the Korean alphabet, with the statue of Admiral Yi Sunshin; A naval commander famous for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598), other attractions include the famous 12.23 Fountain, the Haichi Sculpture, a symbol of Seoul, and a carpet of flowers and a "history path" on either side of the square.
