Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is the starting point for hiking trails, filled with bright orange gates, that shelter the mountain behind. This Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari, the rice god, has been around since AD 816 and contains several buildings and gates. Visitors walk down paths covered by thousands of parallel torii gates, to reach the inner shrine in the middle of the mountain. It is recommended that you wear comfortable shoes and on your way stop at the restaurants that stretch along the road to sample "abu wrig" (fried tofu), a favorite food of foxes.
