Forte Mare Castle is an integral part of Herceg Novi throughout its long history, perched on a cliff above the sea in the far south of the old town. The first stone of the castle is said to have been laid by King Tvrtko I in 1382, and the name of the castle comes from The Italianate has been widely used since the time of the Venetian rule during the seventeenth century, and nowadays, in addition to being one of the symbols of the city and a prominent attraction for tourists, the castle of Forte Mare is also the venue for the annual film festival and serves as an open museum during the summer.
