Built during the reign of Don Philip II at the suggestion of the Italian architect Alexandre Massai to defend the Arad River from attacks, the defensive fortress of Santa Catarina is one of the most visited monuments in the Rocha Beach area and has been preserved in good condition. Over the centuries, it still retains many of its original and interesting architectural features.
