The Estonian National Museum in Tartu was founded in 1909 on the initiative and support of the nation with the aim of protecting and developing the history and culture of Estonia. As in many other European countries, primary importance was attached to the preservation of the vanishing ancient peasant culture, and the collection and care of artifacts was deemed essential, contributing to a better understanding of cultural development, archaeological discoveries, ancient coins, books, manuscripts and historical records.
