The Eldred Rock Lighthouse is located in the middle of the Lynn Water Canal. This lighthouse, along with nine others, was operated after a series of deadly shipwrecks in the vicinity. The most famous of these was the wreck of the Clara Nevada, which ran aground at Eldred Rock in February of 189 and caught fire and sank , killing 75 people; It is also believed that hundreds of pounds of gold were lost in the disaster.
