Information about Edappally Church Complex
It is believed that the church was founded in 593 AD, and is considered one of the oldest churches in Kerala. This church was originally built to glorify the Virgin Mary. It was initially called Mareth Church, then with the passage of centuries and the change of civilizations in the city, it became called Edbali Church. Every year a festival is celebrated in this church for nine days as part of St. George's Day. This church is one of the famous tourist destinations in the city, as it is frequented by locals and tourists, both Christians and non-Christians. It is distinguished by its luxurious building consisting of a beautiful golden dome, many external altars, and many windows that pass the daylight into the interior. From the inside, the church’s décor is characterized by its character that connects the East with the West, as there are European church drawings as well as many Indian drawings and decorations, and this mixture of cultures makes this church complex a wonderful place worth visiting!
