The Rouen dungeon or the Joan of Arc tower is the only remaining part of the Rouen castle, which was built in the Middle Ages during the reign of Philippe Auguste. It was called the dungeon because Saint Joan of Arc was imprisoned and tortured in it. It also played a military role in the Wars of Religion and the Hundred Years' War.
