The Dam is a canal in the Belgian province of West Flanders, linking Bruges with the western Scheldt, and was built on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte, who wished to create a corridor to allow the efficient transportation of military forces without the risk of subversive interventions from the British Navy. After the defeat of Napoleon, it was no longer of strategic importance, and was opened to public traffic in 1856.
