After the end of Ottoman rule in the city of Eger in 1687, mosques were destroyed and gradually replaced by Catholic churches. It was the Jesuits who first built a monastery in the late 17th century, and in 1700, they built the Cistercian Church, also known as St. Bernard's Church, over Baroque, with two impressive towers designed by Stephen Pethὄ, the structure of the church has been twice reconstructed; Once in 1888 and again in 1902.
