The Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror ordered the construction of Gemenlik Castle at the narrowest point in the Darndil Strait in order to ensure the empire’s control over the commercial and military navigation in the strait. It also played a role in defending the city of Çanakkale during the First World War, which led to the destruction of a large part of it at the hands of the French forces. And the British, to become today a military museum where visitors can learn about the military history of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire.
