The church is located in the south of the Old Town and overlooks the Vistula River and is one of the leading religious complexes in Krakow. It has been a pilgrimage church since Bishop Stanislav of Krakow was executed there in 107. He later became the patron saint of both Krakow and Poland, revered by many even present day. A piece of the rock on which he was beheaded is displayed on an altar in the main church. The tomb is also open for public visitation.
