Close to the city's main cathedral is a small but important church. St. Michael's Church was the first parish in Christchurch and was built of wood in 1872 AD, and at that time it was considered one of the largest wooden churches in the world. The building has a Victorian Gothic style with some medieval elements. As of September 2010, this church survived three major earthquakes.
