The church was first built in the Portuguese colonial Baroque style in 1541 on a hill overlooking the town of Panjim in Tsudai City. It was eventually replaced by a larger church in the 17th century as part of Portugal's religious expansion. In this new church there is the old bell that was removed from the ruins of the first church. This bell is the second largest of its kind in Goa. The church is distinguished by its magnificent white marble building, its beautiful statues scattered inside and outside, and its picturesque gardens that surround it. Inside the church there is a giant golden altar and many beautiful Indian decorations.
