The Christ the King or Christo Rey statue was created on October 30, 1927 by the French sculptor Georges Serraz, in fulfillment of a promise made by the Chancellor, Aires de Ornelas. Standing with open arms and facing the ocean, the observation deck at the base of the statue offers a stunning view of the Gulf of Funchal, the Garagao Reserve and the Atlantic Ocean.
