Chichen Itza is a sacred archaeological site, once considered one of the greatest Maya centers in the Yucatan Peninsula, and throughout its nearly 1,000-year history, different peoples have left their mark on the region. Mayan construction with new elements from central Mexico makes Chichen Itza one of the most important examples of the Mayan and Toltec civilizations in the Yucatan. Among the most important buildings that can be found here are the Temple of Warriors, El Castillo and the circular observatory known as El Caracol.
