Cathedral Square is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by historical buildings on all sides, and it was previously a gathering point and unparalleled activity. However, it suffered some damage during the wave of earthquakes that occurred between September 2010 and February 2011. Visitors to this square can attend public art shows or participate in a huge chess game and take memorial photos near the statue of the city's founder, John Robert Godley.
