Paderney Castle was built of sandstone, located on a promontory overlooking the Quarteira River, about 10 kilometers from Albufeira. It was originally used by the Romans in the second century, but the castle we see today was built by the Berbers in the 12th century, and it has undergone a series of changes between its builders Muslims and among the Christian conquerors during the following centuries, and within its walls today are the ruins of a small chapel from the fourteenth century.
