The Capilinhos volcano is located on the Capilo peninsula formed by lava flows from an eruption that occurred between 1957 and 1958. The lighthouse and many homes destroyed by the eruption highlight the dramatic character of this truly unique landscape in the Azores. Sea swallows regularly make their nests in this volcano Lava flows in wetter areas are now colonized by lichens and many types of coastal plants.
