The museum displays works of art from the period from antiquity to the early twentieth century. It has an impressive art collection called the Founders Collection (one of the most important art collections on display in the museum). The art collection owned by this museum is gigantic, as it contains more than six thousand pieces of art from various civilizations, as there are Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic and European art pieces. This museum also displays contemporary art collections, and the largest collection of Portuguese contemporary art in the world. Surrounded by a beautiful garden, there are many facilities, including three restaurants overlooking the garden, and an antiques shop.
