Built in the late 1700's, the Brandenburg Gate is the only surviving city gate of Berlin's majestic old gates. The gate was used as one of the wall crossings in old Berlin, became a place of protest during the partition of Germany, was badly damaged in World War II, and underwent extensive renovation in the early 2000s. Today, it has been completely restored and is a symbol not only of the turbulent history of the region, but also of the reunification of East and West Berlin.
