The Botanical Garden of Pisa is the oldest university botanical garden in Europe, which was established in 1544 AD by the naturalist, botanist and physician Luca Ghini. The garden has a distinctive design, surrounded by stone walls that give it the feel of a "secret garden", and there are fountains, ponds, a historic greenhouse, a collection of aquatic plants and cacti, an arboretum, a library, a herb garden, and the oldest iron-framed greenhouse in the country.
