The Benedictine monastery of St. Mange was founded in the first half of the ninth century as a monastery owned by the Prince Bishops of Augsburg. It is a sacred place for the residents of Fussen, because the body of Saint Mang, who died in the ninth century, was found in it uncorrupted, and this was in the opinion of many monastery-goers as evidence of its sanctity. Throughout history, the municipality of Füssen has made many updates to the monastery's buildings. In the eighteenth century, it transformed its irregular and almost inconsistent buildings into identical buildings.
