Bab Al-Diwan, also known as Bab Al-Bahr, is one of the oldest gates of the city of Sfax, located in the southern facade of the old city between Bab Al-Kasbah in the western corner and Bab Al-Nar in the eastern corner. It was called Bab Al-Diwan during the Hafsid era from the Arabic word “Diwan” It refers to the customs administration, where Sfax had extensive economic and trade relations with other cities. It was also called Bab al-Bahr because it opens to the sea. Today, the door includes some shops that are believed to have been strongholds for soldiers and guards in the past.
