Legend has it that Joseph of Arimathea collected the blood of Christ in a cloth after the crucifixion, and the cloth remained in Jerusalem until the Crusader King Baldwin II gave it to his son-in-law, the Count of Flanders, who brought it to Bruges. However, the true story is that the blood came from Constantinople where a large collection of religious relics were kept until the Crusaders attacked the city in 1204.
