Information about Basilica of the Holy Blood
Legend has it that Joseph of Arimathea collected the blood of Christ in a cloth after the crucifixion, and the cloth remained in Jerusalem until the Crusader King Baldwin II gave it to his son-in-law, the Count of Flanders, who brought it to Bruges. However, the true story is that the blood came from Constantinople where a large collection of religious relics were kept until the Crusaders attacked the city in 1204. The holy blood is believed to have been obtained during the pillaging by the forces of Baldwin IX and sent to Bruges; Tourists visit this church to learn about this story and contemplate the beauty of its historical architecture.
