Located on a slightly raised platform in the heart of the Heliopolis district on the outskirts of Cairo, Baron Empain is a gigantic palace built by Baron Édouard Empain; A Belgian businessman and architect who also built the Paris metro, the palace's architecture and distinctive location have made it popular among locals and tourists. Built between 1907 and 1911, the palace is covered in animal motifs and detailed figures inspired by Orissa in India and Angkor Wat. In Cambodia, once distinguished by its luxurious gardens, gilded doors, and Belgian mirrors designed by Georges-Louis Claude, this long-abandoned palace is said to be connected to underground tunnels that lead to the nearby Catholic cathedral where the baron is buried.
