Baku Olympic Stadium, also known as Baku National Stadium, was built to provide Azerbaijan with a world-class venue for football and athletics events, to become the focus of the 2015 European Games, and the home of the Azerbaijan national football team. Plans for the new stadium were first submitted in 2008, construction began in 2011 and it took nearly four years to complete the construction. The stadium was officially opened in 2015 and many international and local matches were held in it.
