Founded in 1050-1000 BC, the city of Teos was one of 12 cities in antique Ionia, and was also known as the city of Dionysus, god of wine in mythology, and is also the city of artists, in which the first players guild in history was formed. The ruins of the ancient coastal city of Teos today are located near the city of Izmir, and include historical places to visit such as the famous Temple of Dionysus, the theater that seats about 500 people, the city walls, the remains of the port, the polyterion and the gymnasium. In the port, which served as a naval base in the Ottoman era, remains a castle built 1522 to the present day.
