Alyscamps (Elysian Fields), this place is the comprehensive Roman burial, which is an exceptional testimony to the history of ancient Arles, located in the southeast of ancient Arles. The Gallo Roman cemetery was found on the southeastern edge of the old town. According to the legend of Saint Trophim, the site was designated as a Christian cemetery. In the Middle Ages, Alscamps was a place of so great value, and so respected, that the dead were brought to this place for burial from great distances. The tomb was mentioned in several works of art due to its great importance, such as the comic artwork of the famous Italian poet “Dante”, which he wrote in the fourteenth century.
