The architecture of Alexander's church is very similar to the neo-Gothic style, with influences from other styles. The church was named after the Russian Emperor Alexander II due to the laying of the foundation stone on the 25th anniversary of his accession to power, March 2, 1880 AD. It became the main church of the Diocese of Tampere when construction was completed in 1881.
