Information about Aladzha Monastery
The Aladzha Monastery is a medieval monastery that was built inside a cave, and is located on the outskirts of Varna. It was inhabited by monks during the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries. In 1927, the monastery was declared a historical monument, and in 1968 it was declared an Architectural Monument of National Importance. The caves of the monastery were excavated on two levels in a large limestone boulder about 40 meters high. The first level consists of the monastery chapel, the monastic residences, the dining and kitchen platforms, the small cemetery, the basement and the farm. The second level is a natural cave in the eastern end of which there is a small church.
