Information about Akcakale Castle
Akcakale Castle is located 18 km west of Trabzon. The castle was built on a balcony overlooking the sea. It is believed that the castle was built by Emperor Alexios II (Alessio II Comneno) between 1297-1330 AD, to protect it from the Seljuks. After the occupation of Trabzon, the castle was restored in the Ottoman era, and although many parts of the castle, which was built of rubble and stone, were destroyed, it did not depart much from its original appearance. However, the wooden structure between the floors prevented these sections from being accessible to the present day.
