The monastery is a huge building carved into the sandstone in the ancient Jordanian city of Petra. This distinctive landmark was built in the middle of the first century AD, and is arguably one of the most famous monuments in Petra, located high in the hills northwest of the city center. The monastery is 40.2 meters high and is carved deep into the mountain, while its main door is 8 meters high. The main inner room is huge and 11.5 meters high, lit only by lighting that comes through the entrance.
