The beauty of the magnificent building of the Achilleion Palace hides a very sad story, where Elizabeth, the Empress of Austria, wanted to retire from the world after her husband's betrayal of her and the assassination of her only son, so she came by the sea and inhabited this luxurious palace and spent her time in its gardens. The palace is also known as an important center of European diplomacy but has now been turned into a museum that houses some of the possessions of the Empress of Austria, and a collection of paintings, statues and sculptures.
