Objection to a Schengen visa refusal

Reasons for rejecting a Schengen visa

In the rejection letter you receive, you will find that the relevant authorities have stated the reasons for rejecting your visa. It is important to address these reasons if you plan to file an objection or file a new application.

Here are some common reasons for Schengen visa rejection:

1. Unclear purpose of visit: A visa may be refused if it is not clear to the relevant authorities why you want to travel to the Schengen Area.

2. Invalid passport: If the passport is expired, damaged or fake, your visa application may be rejected.

3. The visa is already valid: If you already have a valid visa in the Schengen area, your application will be rejected.

4. Previous violation of laws in the Schengen Area: If you have violated laws in the Schengen Area during a previous visit, this may result in a visa refusal.

5. Criminal record: If you have a criminal record or a suspicious criminal history, this may be a reason for your visa to be rejected.

6. Invalid documents: An invalid birth certificate or marriage certificate can cause visa refusal.

7. Travel insurance is insufficient: You must present a valid insurance policy covering your period of stay in the Schengen Area. If the policy is invalid, the visa may be refused.

8. Not providing sufficient financial resources: You must provide evidence of your ability to cover the costs of the trip, including accommodation and daily expenses. If you do not provide sufficient financial resources, your visa may be refused.

It is important to address these reasons if you intend to file an objection or new application, and ensure that you provide all the required documents and information to increase the chances of your application being successful next time.

Objection to a Schengen visa refusal

The appeal procedure against your Schengen visa refusal gives you the opportunity to express your opinion in writing regarding the refusal. You may also submit new documents or additional information to support your application. Your file will be reviewed after receiving the objection at no additional cost by a staff member other than the one who made the decision to reject your original application.

You can submit the objection within a maximum of one month from the date of receipt of the notification of rejection of your Schengen visa application. However, you should keep in mind that the objection processing time at the embassy may take up to twelve months. Since the purpose of the trip may lose its validity during this period, in some cases it may be better to submit a new visa application. The new application will be carefully considered without any prior judgment during the normal period of 14 days. If you choose to submit a new application, any objection submitted to the Embassy must be withdrawn in writing.

We advise you to refrain from contacting the embassy to inquire about your objection. The Embassy will contact you to provide you with a final response to your objection, whether positive or negative.

Form of objection request:

The objection letter must be sent by regular mail to the embassy's address, or by fax, or can be submitted as a scanned image via email to the visa section of the embassy (mentioning the word "Remonstration" and your name in the subject box).

The objection letter must include the applicant's personal signature or the signature of your official representative based on an official written power of attorney (power of attorney form available separately).

Content of the objection request (necessary information):

  • The applicant's name, date of birth, passport number, and file number (found under the bar code on the visa application receipt).

  • Contact information with the applicant in case of questions (fixed and mobile phone numbers, and email address).

  • The applicant agrees to receive the final decision on the objection via email as well.

  • Detailed explanation: Why do you think the refusal is unjustified from your point of view (indicating the specific reason mentioned in the refusal, and explaining the purpose of the trip).

  • Additional documents supporting the applicant’s position (which were not among the documents submitted with the visa application).

Please note that the Embassy, for reasons of personal data protection, will not provide any information to any party other than the applicant or his legal agent. The embassy will not provide information to any party on its behalf unless a written power of attorney is presented by the applicant.
