Standing on a secluded hill 1,033 meters above sea level in Viana do Castelo, Castro Laboreiro fortress dates back to the 9th century and was enlarged in the 12th century during the reign of Alfonso Henry. Its oval defensive walls and remains have survived to this day. Its tall tower, and although most of it is in ruins, it is definitely worth a visit.
