The Burgund Stave Church is a unique example of splendid medieval architecture, and is a landmark on the tourist route to Laerdal. Built in 1180, the church is exceptionally well preserved and is one of the most outstanding parish churches in Norway; Its best features are the lavishly carved portals and ceiling sculptures that form the heads of dragons. The Stave churches are Norway's most important contribution to world architecture and the oldest preserved wooden buildings in Norway.
